Food Labels 101 - Added Sugars

My favorite part of the new additions to the food label is the “added sugars” section. This is the area of the label where big food has to share with us the sugars they have added to the food that are not natural sugars in the food. Pay special attention to this section! Remember for every 4 grams of sugar you see on the label it is equivalent to 1 teaspoon of sugar! For example if you have 12 grams of sugar in the total sugars it equals 3 teaspoons of sugar. If you have 20 grams of sugar in the total sugars it equals 5 teaspoons of sugar, etc.
